This page provides a description and a link to a "CORINE Land Cover 2000 (CLC2000)" database that provides information needed when modeling exposure levels or performing exposure assessment.

Short Description

Corine Land Cover 2000 (CLC2000) is produced by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and its member countries in the European environment information and observation network (Eionet). Corine Land Cover 2000 (CLC2000) is an update for the reference year 2000 of the first Corine Land Cover database which was finalised in the early 1990s as part of the European Commission program to COoRdinate Information on the Environment (Corine). The inventory is based on computer assisted photo interpretation of satellite images divided into 44 categories, and the raw data have a spatial resolution of 25 hectares. The categories include artificial surfaces, agriculture, forest and natural areas, wetlands and water bodies. The CORINE data are provided both as vector data sets, in their original form, and as a generalised raster data set, at a notional 100 meter resolution. Data is available for EU25 countries. Download requires permission from EEA.

Long description

CORINE Land Cover (originally CLC90) is a categorical database of land occupations designed to be comparable across Europe. CLC90 was finalised in the early 1990s as part of the European Commission program to COoRdinate Information on the Environment (Corine) and provides consistent information on land cover and land cover changes during the past decade across Europe.

The source imagery derives from the late 1980s and early 1990s. CLC90 was compiled on the basis of Landsat and SPOT satellite imagery, using a combination of semi-automated and manual interpretation techniques. The inventory is based on computer assisted photo interpretation of satellite images divided into 44 categories, and the raw data have a spatial resolution of 25 hectares. The categories include artificial surfaces, agriculture, forest and natural areas, wetlands and water bodies (Table 1). The CORINE data are provided both as vector data sets, in their original form, and as a generalised raster data set, at a notional 100 meter resolution.

Corine Land Cover 2000 (CLC2000) is produced by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and its member countries in the European environment information and observation network (Eionet). It is based on the results of IMAGE2000, a satellite-imaging program undertaken jointly by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and the EEA.

One of the major tasks undertaken in the framework of the Corine program has been the

establishment of a computerised inventory on land cover. Data on land cover is necessary for

the environmental policy as well as for other such as regional development and agriculture policies.

At the same time it provides one of the basic inputs for the production of more complex

information on other themes (soil erosion, pollutant emissions into the air by the vegetation, etc.).

The objectives of the land cover project are:

1. to provide those responsible for and interested in the European policy on the environment with quantitative data on land cover, which is consistent and comparable across Europe;

2. to prepare one comprehensive land cover database for the 25 EC member states

Corine Land Cover 2000 (CLC2000) is an update for the reference year 2000 of the first Corine Land Cover database which was finalised in the early 1990s as part of the European Commission program to COoRdinate Information on the Environment (Corine). It provides consistent information on land cover and land cover changes during the past decade across Europe. CLC2000 is based on the photo interpretation of satellite images by the national teams of the participating countries. The resulting national land cover inventories are further integrated into a seamless land cover map of Europe. The resulting European database is based on standard methodology and nomenclature.
