Meta-level variable: research question for the assessment

Scope

What is a good scope for this assessment such that the assessment

  • effectively builds on existing work and work that will be done anyway in Intarese, Heimtsa, KTL, or other closely related institutes,
  • acts as the Intarese mega case study as a part of the WP4.3 work,
  • utilises the tools and methods developed in Intarese,
  • is topical and has high policy relevance, e.g. related to COP-15 (Dec 2009) or Conference of Environment and Health Ministers of Europe (early 2010?),
  • assesses issues on the European scale,
  • is prognostic, i.e. assesses future impacts of current policy options?
  • relates to the impacts of climate change,
  • relates to the impacts of climate change mitigation policies,
  • the parts of the assessment have shared parts, such as population data, future trends of climate, and/or international policies such as emission trade systems,
  • the assessment shows clear synergism in working collaboratively between its parts?

Result

The Intarese mega case study should include the following elements:

  • Pollutants: PM2.5. CO2, other greenhouse gases. O3 and related UV radiation. Noise.
  • Climate trends: All trends (temperature changes given different emission scenarios) presented in the IPCC report.
  • Population: the population of the European Union. The level of detail may vary from one area to another.
  • Sectors of activity: Traffic. Heat and electricity production. Drinking water production (tap/bottled). Waste incineration.

Detailed results are shown in the scope of the assessment described below.

Climate change policy assessment

Scope

Purpose

A tentative research questions:D↷

  • What are the impacts of climate change in Europe?
  • What are the impacts of climate change mitigation in Europe?

Boundaries

  • Population in Europe
  • Time 2008-2050
  • Climate patterns in the future based on IPCC results and predictions.
