Population data in Europe are provided mainly as enumerations of resident population by census tract. LAU 2 or local administrative unit 2 is the smallest unit for which population data are available. This is equivalent to communes in France, wards in the UK. These administrative units, however, vary greatly in their surface area and population across the EU, creating significant difficulties both for analysis and for visualisation of the data. These data are available from national census and statistics organisations, only some of which is compiled here.

The LAU2 tables available here are for ca. 2001 census year with population stratified by age and sex. They have been matched based on SHN code to the administrative boundaries GIS data to facilitate mapping, and modelling of finer resolution population grids. Only those tables that were freely available are attached here - see Sources/References for information on data for the EU25 countries.

All data were sourced between mid 2006 - late 2007 from the individual Country Statistics offices. Many datasets were freely available either via download or email request, whilst several had to be purchased. Links to specific statistics offices may be easily found using a search engine.
