Operationalising large structural changes to existing systems relates to the critical problem of actually making new, improved systems to take place in a situation where there is an established system and high resistance.

Scope

The purpose is to find ways to actually make new, improved systems to take place in a situation where there is an established system and high resistance.

Definition

Procedure

  1. Define the purpose of the system.
  2. Define the indicators of performance of the system.
  3. Plan a new system such that is fulfils the performance criteria as well as possible.
  4. Compare the new system to the existing system.
  5. Describe both systems in a systematic, formal way.
  6. Describe another system on a higher abstraction level such that both the current and the new system can be described as specific cases of this general system.
  7. Identify the parameters that are critically different in the current and the new system.
  8. Describe a time shift for these parameters such that they originally have the values of the current system, that they in the end have the values of the new system, and that in between there is no time point where the combination of parameters would not be feasible.
  9. If possible, describe these parameters in the language that is currently used to describe the current system. Explain the new system and the planned change using this language.
    • If the current language cannot be used to describe the new system, teach the necessary new vocabulary first, and then explain the system.
